In the thousand songs about the cycladic islands Santorini stands forth . It comes directly to our ears,eyes and mind as its landscape combines light and darkness, the white of its houses and the black sand of its beaches, the multicoloured rocks and the silver blue sea.
The rocky caldera gazes at the silent black volcano while the calm,green vineyards are moved by  sudden breezes. The ancient city of Akrotiri resumes the history of the first inhabitants organizing the first settlements and spreading civilization in the Aegean sea and further to the whole world. At the highest spot of the island stands Pyrgos. It is a picturesque medieval village with castle- Castelli- and narrow streets , traditional houses and lots of churches. It dominates the distance between the city of Fira and the monastery of Prophet Elias on top of the highest rock of the islond.
The inhabitants of Santorini are hospitable, hard working people fighting with the elements of nature. Distant and yet intimate Santorini remains unforgettable to travellers.
